Bravo for The McPherson Furniture Store of Kansas’ full-page advertisement in a recent issue of The Newton Kansan. Newton merchants should follow suit! Projecting the image of Newton as a regional “destination” shopping hub through advertising in surrounding communities will attract more customers and increase sales tax revenue.

For an example: During my tenure in marketing for Newton Medical Center from 2004 to 2011, I realized that using newspapers distributed in Newton, Halstead, Hesston, Valley Center Sedgwick, Burrton, Whitewater, Park City, Bel Aire, Kechi, Hillsboro, and Marion was a necessity, not a luxury, to keep the public informed of new patient services. Today residents in Valley Center, Park City, Sedgwick and Hillsboro have access to full-time local physicians in their own home towns, thanks to the partnership created between those communities and Newton Medical Center. I believe the medical center’s consistent “storytelling” in surrounding newspapers and Chambers of Commerce played a small part in building those partnerships and improving access to health care in the area.
