  • Burrton girls fall to Little River

  • GOESSEL — The Burrton Charger girls struggled scoring Tuesday, falling to Little River 40-20 in the Goessel Classic.
    Burrton falls to 0-2 in the classic, 1-2 overall, and plays in the fifth-place game at 4 p.m. Saturday. Little River, 1-1, can reach the finals with a win over Canton-Galva Friday.
    Emily Baldwin led Little River with 15 points. Abbie Winter led Burrton with 12 points.
    Burrton fell down 10-0 in the first 4:44 of the game. Abbie Winter broke the shutout with a jumper with 2:42 remaining in the quarter. Little River led 19-6 at the end of the period.
    Burrton didn't score in the second quarter until a pair of Brea Dick free throws with 4:43 left in the half. Dick added a basket in the period. The Charger defense held Little River to just eight points in the period, trailing 27-10 at intermission.
    Burrton was outscored 9-2 in the third quarter. Abbie Winter had the sole basket of the period for the Chargers. Maddie Winter scored the first bucket of the fourth quarter for Burrton, a layup off a turnover 18 seconds into the period. Burrton won the fourth quarter 8-4.
