  • Bethel men fall to Newman

  • WICHITA — The Bethel College men's basketball team played its third exhibition of the season against an NCAA Division II team, and played its closest game.
    The Threshers fell to Newman University 82-58 Tuesday at Fugate Gym in Wichita.
    Newman is 3-3. The game doesn't count on Bethel's record.
    The Threshers stayed with the Jets for the first 10 minutes of the game. Up 15-14, the Jets made a 13-2 run. Newman made a run late in the half to lead 39-23 at the half.
    Bethel stayed with Newman early in the second half. The Jets made a 10-0 run midway in the second half. Bethel got back within 20 with 5:43 to play, but couldn't get any closer.
    Trae Beck scored 15 points for Newman, followed by Marquis Cuyler, Jeremy Espinoza and Jack Pyle with 11 points each.
    Jody Keon Jones led Bethel with 14 points. Cody Cape, Tyler Ellis and Jenson Kingsley scored nine points each.
    Bethel plays at 7 p.m. Saturday against Central Christian in McPherson. The game is a Bethel NU game. Central downed Bethel 82-67 early this season.
