  • Sowers chosen
    to US team
    Hesston High School graduate Liz Sowers was selected to play for the U.S. National Women's Rugby Sevens Team, which will play at the IRB Women's Sevens Tournament Nov. 29 and 30 in Dubai.
    Sowers is making her first appearance for the U.S. Women's Sevens (a seven-on-seven version of rugby). She previously played for the U.S. National Women's American Football Team, which won the world championship during the summer in Finland. She also has played women's football at the semi-professional level.
    Sowers is one of 14 players selected for the tournament.
    Sowers played basketball for Hesston College and Oakland University.
    HC men win
    first game
    HESSTON — The Hesston College men's basketball team posted its first win of the season, stopping the Friends University junior varsity 87-77 Monday at Yost Center in Hesston.
    The Larks led 41-26 at the half, holding off a Falcon comeback in the second half.
    Two Larks posted double-doubles. Darrion Martin scored 20 points with 11 rebounds. Jordan Tanner scored 20 points with 10 rebounds. Tra Smoot scored 14 points. Jesse Johnson scored 13 points. Lawrence Ammons scored 11 points.
    Toby Baxter scored 18 points for Friends. Breyden Fivecoats and Austin Abbott each added 12 points.
    Hesston is 1-6 and hosts the Bethel junior varsity at 8 p.m. today.

    HESSTON — The Hesston College women's basketball team fell to the Friends University junior varsity 79-71 Monday in Hesston.
    The Larks were tied 37-37 at the half.
    Friends was led by Emily Wilson with 18 points, followed by Morgan Bailey with 14, Taylor Williams with 14 and Tete Bartelds with 11.
    For Hesston, Nikki Lowry scored 21 points. Nikkita Lester scored 12 points. Sydni Carter scored 11 points. Makayla Ladwig had 10 rebounds.
