  • WAMEGO — The Berean Academy girls' cross country team fell short in its bid to repeat as Class 2A state champions, taking second Saturday at the state meet at the Wamego Country Club.
    Maranatha Academy won the team title over the Warriors 47-66. Ellinwood was third at 92.
    Berean Academy claimed three medals, led by senior Wendy Busenitz in eighth at 16:33.74. Junior Tiffany Wiebe was 10th at 16:34.09. Freshman Allison Topham claimed the final medal, taking 20th in 17:14.50.
    Sophomore Janet Busenitz was three spots out of a medal, taking 23rd in 17:24.11. Sophomore Carissa Slabach was 26th in 17:30.76. Senior Hannah Tangeman took 47th in 18:16.48. Senior Carrie Unruh took 58th in 18:59.53.
    In the Class 2A boys' competition, Ellinwood won with 47 points, followed by Maranatha Academy at 82 and Wichita County at 117. Berean Academy took ninth with 217 points. Remington was 12th with 289 points.
    For the Berean boys, senior Harrison Briscoe was 34th in 18:57.58, followed by senior Matthew Wine in 48th in 19:20.22, senior Jason Funk in 64th in 19:56.61, junior Hunter Womack in 74th in 20:24.72, junior Ben Hirsch in 81st in 20:52.61, senior Caleb Slabach in 87th in 21:22.67 and sophomore Jathan Clark in 93rd in 21:40.35.
    For the Remington boys, junior John Brunner was six spots off a medal, taking 26th in 18:38.75. Senior Zach Thornberg was 78th in 20:38,79, followed by Senior Brad Johnson in 90th in 21:34.58, senior Devin Reeves in 92nd in 21:38.03, freshman Kevin McKaughan in 98th in 23:31.26, junior Dakotah Gillmore in 99th in 23:55.85 and sophomore William Graham in 100th in 24:24.33.
    In the Class 1A girls' competition, Goessel took fifth. Greely County won at 40 points, followed by Macksville at 49 and Wheatland-Grinnell at 81. Goessel scored 95 points.
    The Bluebirds claimed a medal when junior Sophie Freuler placed 15th in 17:38.90. Freshman Jen Meysing was 29th in 18:42.51, followed by junior Mayuko Kanda in 51st in 20:29.04, freshman Riley Jarvis in 60th in 20:51.50 and sophomore Merle Weidenhammer in 77th in 22:15.70.
    For the Goessel boys, senior Heath Goertzen was 62nd in 21:00.06.
    In the Class 1A boys' race, the Burrton boys placed 12th. Pike Valley won with 50 points, followed by Frankfort at 58 and Natoma was 59. Burrton scored 207 points.
    Burrton was led by senior Caleb Hurst in 42nd in 20:07.95, followed by sophomore Oscar Canada in 76th in 22:25.71, junior Nathan Harper in 78th in 22:28.90, junior Zach Hardin in 83rd in 23:31.71 and senior Paul Pohlman in 86th in 25:38.67.
