WICHITA — The Berean Academy boys' soccer team avenged a loss and advanced to state all at the same time Friday, stopping Wichita Independent 3-2 in overtime Friday in the Class 4-3-2-1A regional finals in Wichita.
It was the second straight game between the two teams where Berean took a two-goal lead only to have the Panthers tie the game.
Tyler Busenitz scored two goals with an assist to lead the Warriors. He scored on two direct kicks in the first half. Colton Leinbach scored the game winner in the 85th minute on a pass from Busenitz.
Independent, 13-5, had second-half goals by Francisco Franco and Daniel Moon. Franco scored four goals last week in a 4-3 overtime win over Berean.
Dallas Wiebe had nine saves in goal for the Warriors. Jonathan Richmond had 10 saves for Independent.
Berean improves to 12-4-1 and plays 13-3-2 Rose Hill at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The winner advances to the state final four at Hummer Sports Park in Topeka.
