HAYS — The Goessel High School volleyball team reached the semifinals of the Class 1A, Division I state volleyball tournament after a 2-1 pool play finish Friday at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays.
Goessel, seeded fifth, opened with a two-set loss to fourth-seeded Spearville 25-20, 25-14. The Bluebirds then knocked off top-seeded Caldwell in three sets, 20-25, 25-7, 25-22. Goessel finished pool play with a two-set win over eighth-seeded LaCrosse 25-18, 25-16.
Goessel was aided by Spearville, which knocked off Caldwell 25-14, 25-22, ensuring the Bluebirds getting second place in the pool and advancing.
Goessel, 34-9, faces second-seeded Hoxie at 10 a.m. today in the semifinals. The finals and third-place match follow.

LEBO — The Peabody-Burns Warriors claimed an Eight-Man Division I district title with a 36-14 win over Lebo Thursday in Lebo.
The Warriors improve to 8-1, 5-1 in district play. Coupled with Madison-Hamilton's win over Centre, Peabody-Burns wins the district title by virtue of its win against Madison-Hamilton last week.
Fred Windsor rushed for 205 yards on 25 carries for the Warriors. Clayton Philpott rushed for 126 yards on 10 carries with three touchdowns. Philpott added a 23-yard touchdown catch. Kyle Braxton rushed for a touchdown and threw the touchdown pass to Philpott.
Leading 16-8 at the half, the Warriors scored 14 points in the third quarter to take command of the game.
Windsor, Kyle Seeney, Braxton and Xavier Jabary each had seven total tackles. Windsor, Kevin Baatrup and Braxton each had an interception. Jabary recovered a fumble.
Peabody-Burns hosts Clifton-Clyde at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

McPHERSON — The Bethel College men's basketball team opened the regular season with an 82-67 loss to Central Christian College Friday in McPherson.
Bethel trailed by four, 33-29, at the half.
Central, 2-0, was led by Aaron Miller with 16 points, followed by Kris Quant with 15, Chris Quincy with 11, Nathan Fort with 11 and Daniel Nwosuh with 10.
Bethel scoring was not reported at deadline.
Bethel plays at 2 p.m. Nov. 9 at Park University.
