  • USD 373 school board member Barbara Bunting has officially filed to run for the office of state representative in the 2014 election.
She visited the Harvey County Courthouse Friday morning to begin filing paperwork. She will be running as a Republican candidate in the Aug. 5, 2014, primary for the 72nd district. The office currently is held by Marc Rhoades, also of Newton.
"I've had people contacting me for some time, asking if I would consider this," Bunting said. "I am spending time listening to the constituents in this district, in an attempt to best represent them."
In addition to the USD 373 school board, Bunting also has been involved with local organizations such as the Harvey County Drug-Free Youth Coalition, the Newton Chamber of Commerce, St. Mary's Catholic Church, and the Newton Mid-Kansas Symphony Orchestra Guild.
Nancy Craig will serve as Bunting's campaign treasurer. Her steering committee will be Sue Ice, Bill Hake, Christine Downey-Schmidt, Ron Lang, Willis Heck, Gary Hill and John Robb.
