  • OLATHE — The Newton High School gymnastics team ended the season with a sixth-place finish and three medals Saturday at the KSHSAA State Meet in Olathe.
    Lawrence Free State won the team title at 105.05, followed by Olathe Northwest at 103.775 and Shawnee Mission West at 103.3. Newton posted a team score of 99.775.
    Jessie Payne of Olathe Northwest won the all-around title at 36.975. Payne won the vault at 9.7 and the uneven parallel bars at 8.575. Grace Bartle of Lawrence Free State won the balance beam at 9.175 and the floor exercises at 9.475.
    Newton was led by freshman Kailey Naysmith, who took sixth in the all-around at 34.625. Naysmith was fifth on the balance beam at 8.9. Naysmith was sixth on the bars at 8.575.
    "I predicted Kailey would be in the top six," Newton coach JoAnne Thaw said. "Three of the top six were freshmen."
    Newton opened the meet with a 25.55 team score on vault, led by Naysmith at at 8.6, Carlye Anderson at 8.5 and Emily Kuhn at 8.45.
    "Our girls prepared and actually had a good meet," Newton coach JoAnne Thaw said. "We had a good rotation, starting third rotation on vault. Emily Kuhn started us off with a high-difficulty vault that she's been doing. She scored an 8.45, a season high for her. Emmaleah Smet and Anna Casper both finished with an 8.25, Carlye Anderson 8.5 and Kailey Naysmith 8.6."
    Newton scored a 24.55 on the bars, led by Naysmith, Anderson at 8.05 and Casper at 7.925.
    "Our bars showed some improvement, and we ended up with our season high of 24.55," Thaw said. "Kailey's 8.575 earned her a sixth-place medal."
    Newton scored a 24.625 on balance beam, led by Naysmith at 8.9, Anderson at 8.125 and Casper at 7.6.
    "Beam looked really great with Alexandra Glann starting us off with a stuck routine and a season high of 7.5," Thaw said. "Naomi scored 7.175, Anna 7.6, Carlye 8.125 and Kailey 8.9, which earned her a fifth-place medal. Only one fall out of the five routines was impressive."
    Newton finished the day with a 25.05 on the floor exercises, led by Naysmith at 8.55, a season high, Glann at 8.45 and Casper at 8.05.
    "Johanne Custavson started floor with a smooth routine and scored 7.95," Thaw said. "I was pleased with our season and how the girls started and finished. They were focused and did a great job."
