EMPORIA — The Newton High School gymnastics team ended the regular season with a win over Emporia in a dual meet Monday in Emporia.
Newton won the meet 97.875-83.1.
"Our girls showed some improvement in many areas and they are ready to peak," Newton coach JoAnne Thaw said. "We are looking forward to a good showing at state this weekend. Kailey (Naysmith) has been sick and we took her off bars and watered down her routines a little, but she has come back strong and is looking great. I know they will pull together and make a strong effort toward one of those trophies. It's been a fairly consistent year so we are looking forward to a great finale!"
Newton's Carlye Anderson won the all-around competition at 32.875, followed by teammates Anna Casper in second at 30.425 and Naomi Epp in third at 29.525. Emmaleah Smet scored a 29.2.
In the vault, Naysmith won at 8.8, followed by Anderson in second at 8.4 and Smith in third at 8.3. Emily Kuhn and Casper both scored an 8.1. Epp had a season high 8.0.
On the uneven parallel bars, Anderson won at 8.625, a season high. Casper was second at 8.0. Epp was third at 7.275, a season high. Smet and Kuhn both had season highs of 7.0.
On the balance beam, Naysmith won at 8.9, followed by Anderson in second at 7.7. Epp scored a 7.1, followed by Alexandra Glann at 7.0, Smet at 6.7, Casper at 6.5, Kuhn at 6.0 and Johanne Gustavsen at 4.8.
On the floor exercises, Glann took second at 8.525, followed bt Anderson in third at 8.15. Naysmith scored an 8.1, followed by Casper at 7.825, Smet at 7.2, Epp at 7.15 and Gustavsen at 6.75.
Newton ends the season at 11 a.m. Saturday at the state meet at Olathe North.
