    split finale
HAYSVILLE — The Newton High School volleyball team ended the regular season with a split Tuesday at Campus.
Newton downed Campus 25-21, 27-29; and lost to Andover 25-21, 25-21.
"Campus played really well this evening," Newton coach Jamie Dibbens said. "It was their senior night and they were fired up about that. I thought we had some great moments against Andover. We did really well against their serve and were able to side out. We aren't blocking consistently right now and that did not allow us to string together points."
Newton ends the regular season 24-15, 9-3 in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play. Newton opens Class 5A sub-state play at approximately 3 p.m. Saturday against 26-11 Salina Central at Kapaun-Mt. Carmel. The winner plays Kapaun-Mt. Carmel (33-4) or Wichita West (0-26) in the championship match.
    Hesston sweeps
    season finale
HALSTEAD — The Hesston High School volleyball team ended the regular season with a split Tuesday at Halstead.
    Hesston downed Halstead 25-12, 25-20; and Nickerson 25-18, 25-17. Halstead downed Nickerson 25-21, 25-18.
"We started strong in the first set against Halstead, but relaxed a bit in the second set and didn’t come out as sharp, falling behind 16-12," Hesston coach Jason Peters said. "We were able to keep our composure and made a run to finish out the match.
"Against Nickerson, we struggled a bit in the first set, but our serving helped us pull ahead. We made a lot of hitting errors against Nickerson, which we will need to fix before Saturday. We blocked well in both matches, and served well throughout the night. We will just need to put it all together Saturday to be successful against a strong Sub-State field."
Nickerson ends the season 14-22. Hesston ends the season 30-6, while Halstead is 24-12. Both Hesston and Halstead play in the Class 3A sub-state tournament in Marion. Halstead faces 24-12 Sedgwick in the first round. Hesston faces 19-17 Marion in the first round.
