With the first win of the season — and the first in district play — slipping away, the Remington Broncos turned to the running game. The end result was a gutsy 14-8 win over Leon-Bluestem in Whitewater.

Trailing 8-6 entering the fourth quarter, Remington turned to senior running back Eli Igo who dominated a 89-yard, 8-minute drive with eight carries for 51 yards and his second touchdown of the night. Freshman Todd Ensz added nine carries for 48 yards on the drive — and Remington celebrated what would be the winning touchdown with 3:25 remaining in the game.

“It was heart,” Igo said. “It was all heart.”

Igo finished the night with 151 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries. Ensz finished with 101 yards on 23 carries. The two combined for 180 rushing yards in the second half and 251 on the night.

“We talked about at half that this game would come down to the offensive line,” said coach Chris Lawler. “We pointed to the offensive line and tight ends and said ‘if we are going to win this game, it will be because of you. If we lose the game it is because of you.’ We made that choice to give Igo the ball. He is our workhorse on offense and defense.”

The win is Remington’s first of the season, coming in the squad’s district opener.

The Broncos improve to 1-6 on the season and will face 2-4 Wichita Independent on the road next week.

“Tonight feels great,” Igo said. “This feels amazing.”
