STERLING — The Hesston High School volleyball team claimed a sweep Tuesday in Central Kansas League play at Sterling.
The Swathers downed Pratt 25-22, 25-19; and Sterling 15-25, 25-14, 25-10. Sterling downed Pratt 21-25, 25-19, 25-23.
"This was a matchup of second, third, and fourth-place teams in the league, so we knew we would be tested in each match," Hesston coach Jason Peters said. "We had a tough start to our night, as we were a little sluggish and lacked the energy we had at times last week. Our passing was not as crisp as it should have been, and we were a little intimidated by their blockers and didn’t hit as aggressively as we should have. Fortunately for us, Pratt made some mistakes that kept us in the match and we were able to pull ahead to win the match in two sets.
"Sterling continued the momentum they had from defeating Pratt in the first match of the night, and they came out very strong in the first set, we had trouble getting blocks on their hitters and we were one step slow on defense throughout the set. Sterling has multiple strong hitters, similar to us, and they play good defense. We always seemed to be on the defensive side of the net as we weren’t able to be nearly as aggressive on offense as we needed to be.
"The second and third sets were a different team, and we played with much more energy. Our passing and defense were much, much better, which led to much better hitting. We got a number of big blocks that kept the momentum on our side, and we were able to side-out very well. We are ready for a few days to recover after playing 12 matches in eight days, but will have a very big challenge on Saturday at the Clearwater tournament, with three ranked 4A teams in the field."
Hesston is 25-4, finishing CKL play at 8-1, taking second place in the league. Pratt is 23-5 and Sterling is 17-12, both finished 6-3 in CKL play. Hesston plays Saturday at the Clearwater Invitational.
