  • The Newton High School boys' soccer team got off to a slow start and was quickly buried by Salina South 4-0 Tuesday in AV-CTL I play at Fischer Field.
South was led by Victor Escalante with two goals and an assist. Jorge Ponce added a goal with an assist. Jose Escobedo added a goal. Luis Jimenez and David Palacios each added an assist.
Newton was outshot 13-8, 9-3 in the second half.
"They outplayed us tonight," Newton coach Scott Jantzi said. "They were the better team. We will face them again in regionals. We will continue to battle. We have two more matches. We need a better effort the next two matches. We will meet them again. They're young, they're fast and they're organized. Our players let down after a couple of wins last week. Our mind set wasn't where it needed to be."
Newton controlled possession early, but still gave up a goal in the 10th minute on a shot by Escalante with an assist by Gonzalez. South took control of the game from that point.
South put things away with a goal in the 39th minute by Ponce.
Newton had chances in the second half, but South scored in the 74th and 79th minutes.
Ethan Bandre had seven saves in goal for South. Gustavo Castillo had four saves for Newton, followed by Carlos Cornejo, who finished the game with two saves.
South improves to 9-4-1, 1-3-1 in AV-CTL I play. Newton falls to 8-4-2, 3-2-1 to end AV-CTL I play. South takes a one-point lead over Newton for the fourth seed in regionals. The top four teams host regionals.
Newton hosts Goddard at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in a make-up of a game postponed by weather. Goddard was 7-5 going into Tuesday, staying alive for the fourth seed as well. Newton downed Goddard 2-1 at the Goddard Invitational early in the season.
"They're another quality squad," Jantzi said. "They can beat any squad. We have to come out ready and organized."
