  • The Newton High School girls' tennis team will send a doubles entry to the Class 5A state tournament following a sixth-place regional finish Saturday at the Phil Scott Tennis Center at Newton and the Marty Ward Tennis Center on the Bethel College campus.
    Andover, ranked first in Class 5A, topped second-ranked Kapaun-Mt. Carmel 17-16 for the team title. Great Bend was third at 11, followed by Valley Center in fourth at nine, Newton in fifth at four, Hays in sixth at two and Wichita Heights in seventh with no score.
    Andover and Kapaun each qualified three entries to state. Great Bend and Valley Center qualified two entries. Newton and Hays each qualified one entry.
    In the singles finals, Dohee Lee of Andover downed teammate Grace Ball 6-0, 6-1. In the doubles finals, Elizabeth Pringle and Carmen Mindt of Kapaun-Mt. Carmel downed Macy Moyers and Morgan Francis of Great Bend 6-3, 6-2.
    Newton senior Hannah Carlgren and Serena Wong finished sixth in doubles to advance to state. After a first-round win, Carlgren and Wong lost a third-set tie-breaker in the quarterfinals. Carlgren and Wong won in the consolation semifinals to clinch a spot at state, but lost in the fifth-place match.
    Carlgren and Wong advance to state with a 22-9 record.
    The team of Kate Jolliff and Stephanie Brown lost in the first round.
    In singles play, Erin Graber won in the first round, lost in the second round and lost in the consolation semifinals, one win shy of a state berth. Susannah Epp lost a third-set tie-breaker in the first round.
    The state meet is 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Arkansas City High School.
