Newton Recreation Commission — Located at 415 N. Poplar St.; phone: 283-7330. Hours: 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 5:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Fridays, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and 12:30 to 5 p.m. Sundays.

Youth Recreational Basketball League — Registrations are being taken through the month of October. Deadline: Friday, Nov. 1.

NRC offers Land and Water Fitness Classes - First Session FREE for all water or land fitness classes taught by NRC instructors. Everyone is invited to try a class. Call 283-7330 for class times.

“School’s Out” Play Days — 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16 through Friday, Oct.18. The Recreation Center is the place to be when school is out for the day. The teachers have to work but the kids get to play. NRC staff has a wide variety of activities planned including games in the gym, swimming, movies, craft projects, video games and great snacks that add up to one great day. For children ages 5 through 12. The program is a state-licensed day care and an SRS-approved program. Registration packets and medical release forms are required and are available at the Newton Activity Center front desk.

Scout Night at the NRC Pool — 7:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17. Boys and girls of all ages involved in scouting can swim for 75 cents by showing proof of membership. Scout leaders swim for free.

Edible Art Creations – 5 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays Oct. 22 through Nov.5. If your child is at the age of wanting to eat his/her art supplies while you are trying to teach him/her to expand their creative skills, you will enjoy these perfectly tasty projects. Instructor: Candice Egizi-Sifuentez. Registration Deadline: Sunday, October 20.

Ghoulish Goodies – 4 to 4:45 p.m. Thursday Oct. 24. If you like spooky treats then this class is for you. We will be making fun Halloween themed treats that are sure to fright and delight you. For ages 6 – 10 years old. Instructor: Audrey Gann. Registration deadline: Sunday, Oct. 20.

Movie/Float Night at the NRC Pool — 7:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24. Bring your raft or tube. Float and enjoy the movie for $2.00. All ages welcome.

5th and 6th grade Black Cat Ball – 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25. Join us for an evening of ghoulish fun and dancing. Bring your friends in costume for a howling good time. All students attending must follow the USD 373 dress code and NRC rules. There will be prizes for the best costumes!

Safe Sitter Babysitting Training – 9 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26. Babysitting is important business and good babysitters are always in demand! Safe Sitters is a well-rounded national youth development program that teaches young teens life and safety skills needed to keep themselves and the children in their care safe. Instructor: Penny Dorado. Registration deadline: Sunday, Oct. 20.

Family Candy Scramble and Costume Contest – 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 29. FREE EVENT!!! Put on your costume, grab your flashlight and head to Fischer Field where there will be thousands of pieces of candy scattered on the field. We will have three age groups for the children’s candy scramble and lots of prizes for our costume contest winners in four divisions: Children I (10-15), Children II (5-9), and Tots (4 & Under). Please preregister by calling NRC to let us know how many children will be attending. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by parent or guardian.

Witches Brew – 4 to 4:45 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31. Join us for a spooky Halloween themed cooking session. There are no sweet treats in this class, just a hauntingly delicious meal. For ages 9 -12 years old. Instructor: Audrey Gann. Registration deadline: Sunday, Oct. 27.

Pre-School Tae Kwon Do — 1 to 2 p.m. Saturdays, Nov. 2 and Nov. 9. This class is an introductory Tae Kwon Do class which will emphasize discipline, courtesy and respect and help develop motor skills with a whole lot of fun mixed in! Mr. Monares will end each class with a Korean fable. Instructor: Dany Monares. Registration deadline: Tuesday, Oct. 29.

Gymnastics – Beginners 8:45 to 9:30 or 9:30 to 10:15 or 10:15 to 11 a.m. Saturdays, Nov. 2 – Dec. 14. Introductory classes that will start the kids down the correct road. Basic tumbling, coordination and stretching will be taught. Instructor: Deanna Folkerts. Registration deadline: Saturday, Oct. 26.

Gymnastics – Intermediate 11 to 11:45 a.m. Saturdays, Nov. 2 – Dec. 14. This class builds on existing skills, helps develop coordination, flexibility and confidence. All this and it is fun. Instructor: Deanna Folkerts. Registration deadline: Saturday, Oct. 26.

Gymnastics – Parent -Tot 12 to 12:30 p.m. Saturdays, Nov. 2 – Dec. 14. This is an interactive class with the instructor leading and the assistance of at least one parent/guardian. Work with your child on basic tumbling skills at her/his own pace with guidance from the instructor. Instructor: Deanna Folkerts. Registration deadline: Saturday, Oct. 26.

Men’s Basketball League —Get your body into basketball shape. The season is just around the corner. Form your team today and start working on that jump shot! Games will be played on Thursday evenings League play begins Thursday, November 14. Registration Deadline: Friday, Oct. 25.

Zumba — 10 to 10:55 a.m. Tuesdays and 6 to 6:55 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Ditch the workout – join the party! This Brazilian/Latin dance class is a low impact body energizing aerobic experience. Zumba features fast & slow rhythms to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat. Instructors: Lynette Hendrickson and Olivia Lyles.

Yoga – Recovering Strength and Flexibility – 9:15 a.m. to10:30 a.m. Mondays and Thursdays. Improve strength, balance and range of motion using chairs and other props. Appropriate for those recovering from injury or who have otherwise lost mobility, or those seeking a more gradual approach to learning yoga. Taught by Cathy Anderson .

Yoga – All Levels –8:30 a.m. to9:45 a.m. Wednesdays and Fridays. Explore standing poses, hip-openers, seated poses, twists, backbends, basic inversions, and breathing exercises on deepening levels as you gain experience and skill. Teachers provide variations appropriate for beginners and more advanced students. Taught by Cathy Anderson and Lynette Roth.

Evening Yoga – 8 – 9:15 a.m. Mondays and 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. Wednesdays. Level 1-2 yoga for healthy, new students as well as those with some experience who want to build on their basic knowledge of yoga principles and postures. Instructor: Cathy Anderson and Terra Scott.

Fitness Boot Camp — 5:30 to 6:30 a.m. or 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Fitness Boot Camps are about appropriate, challenging, fun and safe exercises that will sculpt your body the right way as quickly as possible. Exercises are done in a group setting where everyone is encouraged to motivate and uplift their peers to accomplish their goals. All classes are taught by Certified Personal Trainers and each session includes two nutrition seminars. Call 283-7330 for more details.

Take Control With Exercise - Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program – 11 a.m. to noon on Mondays and Thursdays and 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. on Tuesdays. Developed by physical therapists specifically for arthritis, this low-impact exercise-based program uses gentle activities to help increase joint flexibility and range of motion and helps maintain muscle strength. This program also helps increase overall stamina. Taught by Fred Saab, Certified Arthritis Foundation Instructor. Scholarships are available.

Community Movers & Shakers Fitness Class - 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Mondays and 4 – 5 p.m. on Wednesdays at Trinity Heights Methodist Church. This class is suitable for all ages and is challenging by choice! Move to music using a chair for support, stability and stretching. Expect to improve your coordination, balance, strength, agility, attitude and mental focus. This class is low to moderate intensity cardiovascular exercise combined with strength exercises using elastic tubing with handles and concludes with gentle stretching. Instructor: Tracie Strain.

FREE Senior Swim – 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Senior swim is free and open to all over the age of 55. The water temperature is kept between 86 and 89 degrees.

Free Open Gym - Anyone may bring a basketball and shoot some hoops in NRC's gymnasium during business hours.

Climate-controlled indoor walking track - The NRC Gym has a walking track (12 laps equal one mile) which is available for walking at anytime during business hours. Use of the track is free.
