    compete at meet
    SHAWNEE MISSION — The Newton High School gymnastics team placed three gymnasts in the top 10 of the Shawnee Mission South All-Around Invitational Wednesday.
    Megan Vanderpool of Shawnee Mission West won the meet at 36.8, followed by Olivia Williams of Shawnee Mission Southwest at 35.3.
    Newton was led by Kailey Naysmith, who took third at 34.35. Carlye Anderson was seventh at 33.1. Anna Casper was eighth at 32.7.
    On the vault, Naysmith scored an 8.9, followed by Anderson at 8.55 and Casper at 8.65.
    On the uneven parallel bars, Naysmith scored an 8.65, Casper scored an 8.65 and Anderson scored an 8.35.
    On the balance beam, Naysmith scored an 8.6, Anderson scored a 7.9 and Casper scored a 7.4.
    On the floor exercises, Anderson scored an 8.3, followed by Naysmith at 8.2 and Casper at 8.0.
    In the junior varsity competetion, Emmaleah Smet took second at 28.6, followed by Naomi Epp in third at 27.85.
    Smet scored an 8.2 on vault, a 6.65 on bars, a 6.5 on beam and a 7.25 on floor. Epp scored a 7.95 on vault, a 6.3 on bars, a 6.3 on beam and a 7.3 on floor.
    Newton competes Oct. 21 at Emporia and Oct. 26 at state in Olathe.

    down Maize
    The Newton middle schools eighth-grade A football team downed Maize 34-0 Thursday at Fischer Field.
    Newton led 7-0 at the half.
    Newton scored on a 15-yard Javier Moreno run, a 25-yard Jose Rojas run, a 15-yard Alejandro Garcia run, a three-yard Warren Dietz run and a one-yard Malachi Castillo run.
    Rojas hit two PAT kicks. Garcia added a two-point conversion run.
    Newton is 4-2 and ends the season 5 p.m. Oct. 17 at the NHS field against Maize South.
    State basketball
    sites named
    TOPEKA — The sites have been selected for the Kansas State High School Activities Association state basketball tournaments March 12 through 15.
    Class 6A will be at Koch Arena in Wichita. Class 5A will be at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka. Class 4A, Division I will be at the Bicentennial Center in Salina. Class 4A, Division II will be at Hartman Arena in Park City. Class 3A will be at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. Class 2A will be at Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan. Class 1A, Division I will be at White Auditorium in Emporia. Class 1A, Division II will be at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays.
