SALINA — The Newton High School girls' golf team finished fourth Tuesday at the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League girls' golf championships at the Salina Municipal Golf Course.
Maize won the team title with a score of 335, followed by Hutchinson at 363-107-108, Salina Central at 363-107-112, Newton at 395 and Salina South at 413.
"The team had their best tournament of the year today at league, even with the strong winds," Newton coach Joanie Pauls said. "They were able to break 400 for the first time this season." Alissa Kim was top medalist at 74. Taelyn Entriken finshed second at 74. Ashley Reiswig was third at 82.
Newton was led by Lexi Pauls, who took fourth at 85, earning All-AV-CTL I honors. Aly Browning shot a 102, followed by Alexis Martinez at 103, Hayley Cooper at 105 and Sierah Schrag at 110.
"Lexi matched her career best of 85 and finished fourth," Joanie Pauls said. "She played smart and was a combined one under on the par fives today. Aly played well but a couple of penalty strokes kept her from breaking 100. Alexis posted a career best today by 10 strokes. She has been working on some swing changes that are paying off. She was able to break 50 on 9 holes for the first time, shootin 49 on the back nine.
"Hayley also shot a career best, improving 12 strokes. Her chipping was much improved today. Sierah played well on the par 3s but struggled a little with the long holes into the wind. All the players are doing a much better job with their short games and we are seeing the improvement in our scores."
Newton plays Monday in the Class 5A regionals at the Smoky Hills Country Club in Hays.
"Smokey Hills can be a difficult challenge," Joanie Pauls said. "We will have to focus on our course management to be successful."
