The annual Trick or Treat Main Street event is coming — with new sponsors this fall.

The Newton Lions Club will host the event this year, and is in the process of signing up businesses that wish to participate from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 26.

"We will not get monetary compensation from this event but we will get a feel good feeling from it," said club member Melanie Babbitt. "Some families just can't do Halloween otherwise."

Main Street will be closed from Fifth to Broadway to make room for thousands of trick-or-treaters who can get candy from area businesses during the 90 minutes.

And not all of the businesses will be downtown shops.

"We're trying to get sign-ups — we want anyone who wants to set up a table to contact us," Babbitt said.

Organizing the event is something Babbitt said fits well with the Lion's Club mission, stemming from a desire to provide a safe environment for children and build community.

"This is about bringing our community together," Babbitt said. "Where we can forget our problems and have fun watching the kids."
