A few years before we all
learned that Friendship Is Magic,
there was a different sort of My Little
Pony special - a Christmas special titled A Very Minty Christmas. And like Friendship Is Magic, this show features several musical numbers.
However, you won’t see Rarity or Fluttershy or even Twilight Sparkle in this
one (though Rarity’s Tabitha St. Germain provides the voices of two characters).
And though both Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash do make appearances, they are
voiced by different actors, and their characters are very different from those
we know on the series. This special is also decidedly aimed at young children,
lacking some of the humor that makes Friendship
Is Magic appeal to adults. Will the Bronies dig it? I’m not sure.

The show opens with a
song about what the ponies love about Christmas, as they decorate their homes
and so on. The Ponyville tradition is to make the Here Comes Christmas Candy Cane
and place it at the top of the tallest tree. The glow of the candy cane is what
helps Santa find their town.

Minty, the story’s lead
character, is a bit on the clumsy side. When we first meet her, she
accidentally knocks the carrot off of a snowman (not a snowpony), and then asks
it, “How can you smell the sweetness of
Christmas without a nose?” (Minty, by the way, is one of the characters
performed by Tabitha St. Germain.) She replaces the carrot. But soon, while
trying to make things perfect, she causes the giant candy cane to break. This
is something she’s unable to replace.

Feeling that she’s ruined
Christmas for everyone, she decides to fix things by first being Santa herself,
and then by traveling to the North Pole to help Santa find Ponyville. Minty has
something of a sock fetish, which leads to the special’s best song, “Nothing
Says Christmas Like A New Pair Of Socks.” The vocals at times sound like Betty
Boop. I wonder if this song will do anything to lessen the disappointment so
many children feel when they open a gift only to discover socks.

Like the television
series, this show does have a strong message about friendship, and helping one
another. But I really missed Fluttershy and the show’s version of Pinkie Pie.

At one point this
special’s Pinkie Pie asks, “Too pink?”
And the special’s version of Rainbow Dash answers, “Oh, darling, you can never have too much of something you love. And you
love pink. Lots and lots of pink.” (Good advice. I love Guinness.)

Special Features

The DVD contains two sing-alongs,
with the lyrics on the screen, the words lighting up as you hear them. The two
songs are “That’s What I Love About Christmas” and “Nothing Says Christmas Like
A New Pair Of Socks.”

My Little Pony: A Very Minty Christmas is scheduled to be released
on October 8, 2013 through Shout! Factory.
