    compete at Classic
    LAWRENCE — The Newton High School girls' cross country team placed 23rd and the boys took 30th out of 36 teams Saturday in the Crimson Division at the Rim Rock Classic Saturday at Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence.
    In the girls' competition, Liberty (Mo.) North won with 124 points, followed by Kearney (Mo.) at 237 and DeSoto at 239.
    Newton had 599 points.
    The Newton girls were led by Sadie Winter in 43rd in 17:03.1 (4,000 meters), Ashlyn Glann in 61st in 17:19.4, Kasey Stucky in 159th in 18:26.8, Elyse Bergquist in 168th inn 18:36.5, Ashley Akers in 197th in 19:14.2, Ashlynn Hamm in 221st in 19:55.2 and Junuen Lujano in 226th in 20:12.3.
    In the boys' competition, Mill Valley won with 197 points, followed by Kapaun-Mt. Carmel at 204 and Blue Valley at 224. Newton scored 716 points.
    For the Newton boys, Thomas Kelso finished 66th in 17:53.3 (5,000 meters), followed by Sam Blaufuss in 133rd at 18:32.4, Robert Loeffler in 176th in 19:00.7, Jacey Friesen in 188th in 19:06.5, Jack Polley in 202nd in 19:18.8, Jason Granados in 227th in 19:52.3 and Brennan Miller in 239th in 20:27.9.
    Newton competes at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Centennial Park in the Newton Invitational.
    Changes for
    WJL in 2014
    A new team has been added to the Walter Johnson League for the 2014 season.
    The Kansas Cougars will join the league, playing home games at Maize High School.
    The North Central Knights, formed last season from a merger of the Lindsborg Knights and Salina Blue Jays, will play next season as the Salina Blue Jays.
    The Wichita Aviators will move to Haysville and become the Haysville Aviators.
    The Topeka Golden Giants have not been invited back to the league for next season. Topeka won the North Division last season, but declined a National Baseball Congress World Series bid. The Giants also dropped out of the Mid Kansas Regional after the tournament started.
    Teams in the North Division for next season will be the Newton Rebels, Hutchinson Monarchs, Salina Blue Jays and Park City Rangers. Playing in the South Division will be the Kansas Cannons, Haysville Aviators, Valley Center Diamond Dawgs and Kansas Cougars.
    The league voted unanimously to play the Mid Kansas Regional at Klein-Scott Field in Newton, The tournament is scheduled for July 18 to 23, pending approval from the Newton Recreation Commission.
