HUTCHINSON — To get to the next level, the Newton High School football team is going to have to make a lot more stops on defense.
That was the lesson the Railers learned from Hutchinson in a 56-32 loss Friday in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play at Gowans Stadium in Hutchinson. The only stops the Railers made were on Hutchinson turnovers.
"That's something we've got to get better at," Newton coach Nate Wollenberg said. "... They're a great team. We knew they were a great team. I give them a lot of credit. I'm proud of our kids. They played hard. We didn't have two offensive linemen who started for us. We lost our safety in practice on Wednesday (Sam Pierce). Seth Hill went down for us in the first quarter. Those are four key guys for us. Then you have to start making adjustments."
Newton had several chances on offense to stay close, or even tie the game.
"It was within reach for a while there," Wollenberg said. "Our kids kept playing. They are one of the top-notch program in the state. We're getting better. We will continue to grow."
Game stats were not reported at deadline. Hutchinson quarterback Turner Wintz rushed for six touchdowns and passed for another.
For Newton, Bradley Million rushed for two touchdowns and caught a touchdown pass. Braedon Morrison passed for two touchdowns. Jack Kingsley led the Railer offense in the second half.
Hutchinson opened the game with two long touchdown drives on its first two possessions. Newton went three-and-out on its first two possessions. The Railers got back in the game when a Hutchinson fumble was recovered by Ty Voth. Two plays later, Braedon Morrison hit Bradley Million for a 24-yard touchdown pass.
Hutchinson made another long touchdown drive that the Railers answered in one play, an 80-yard pass from Morrison to Luke Porter. Hutchinson finally threw a couple passes late in the second quarter, hitting for long yardage and scoring on a 16-yard pass from Wintz to Emilio Tafolla.
A Railer fumble late in the first half, set up a 37-yard run for Wintz. Newton had a long drive stall because of penalties. Kingsley intercepted a Wintz pass at the Hutchinson 44. Newton drove the ball to the one as time expired, missing a chance for a touchdown when the intended receiver fell down on the final play of the half.
Newton made up for it to start the second half, as Matt Willis ran back the kickoff 94 yards for the touchdown. Newton's two-point conversion run fell just short. Newton got the ball back on a fumble, but gave it back on downs four plays later. On the following play, Wintz ran the ball in 70 yards for the score.
Newton replied with a four-play, 67-yard drive that ended on a four-yard Million run. A Hutchinson fumble set up a 46-yard Million run. Newton missed the two-point conversion to keep Hutchinson up by 10. A 45-yard kickoff return for Hutchinson set up a 34-yard scoring run for Wintz.
Newton got to the Hutchinson 15, where a 33-yard Kendall Gaeddert field goal attempt missed just wide. Hutchinson went 80 yards the other way, scoring on a Wintz two-yard run. On third and 21 in the series after a 15-yard Hutchinson penalty, Wintz ran the ball 22 yards for the first down.
Newton got to the Hutchinson 25 with 12 seconds to play, but a sack on fourth down ended the drive.
Newton falls to 2-2 overall and in league play. The Railers host Goddard Eisenhower at 7 p.m. Friday for homecoming. Eisenhower fell to 1-3 after a 21-13 loss to Arkansas City.
"They continue to get better," Wollenberg said. "They are doing a great job. Our kids know we're building. We have two wins, and it's exciting, but our coaches and players know we can do better. Number one right now, we need to get healthy. The execution and timing is not where it could be."
