It took a breakaway goal by Andover Central in the 49th minute to weak up the Newton High School boys' soccer team.
The Railers came back with three goals in the remaining time for a 3-1 win Thursday at Fischer Field.
"It came down to communication on (the Andover Central) goal," Newton coach Scott Jantzi said. "I told them the only way they were going to score was either on a set piece or getting the ball back behind our defense. That set piece came, we didn't have communication on the back side, the ball came free and they had an open shot. I'm proud of the guys for coming back and keeping their composure. Carlos Reyes did a fantasic job up front. When we play to his feet, he is able to distribute the ball to people running off of him. He's deadly. All-around, everybody had a great effort. That last game (a 3-2 overtime loss to Goddard Eisenhower) put a charge in the guys."
Frank Vasquez scored two goals for the Railers. Reyes and Juan Castillo each added a goal. Ngozi Gregory had an assist.
Newton controlled possession from the start of the game, but took very few shots. Central had some chances late in the period, including its sole shot of the half, which hit the crossbar.
Newton scored in the 29th minute when Vasquez converted a crossing pass from about 15 yards out.
The Railers had an 8-1 advantage in total shots in the first half.
Skibba Wyatt scored for Central in the 49th minute to equalize. Newton came back on a breakaway by Reyes in the 54th minute. Goals in the 66th and 79th minute put the game away for the Railers.
Gustavo Castillo had one save in goal for Newton. Andy Robles had eight saves for Andover Central, 0-8.
Newton improves to 5-2-2 and hosts Derby at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
"That's a higher quality team in Derby," Jantzi said. "They are a high-quality team. We'll see where we are from the beginning of the season, when we played Bishop Carroll, to where we are now."
JUNIOR VARSITY — The Newton junior varsity boys downed Andover Central 5-0. Calvin Fox scored two goals for Newton. Michael Conklin, Juan Castillo and Carlos Beltran each added a goal. Carlos Cornejo and Caleb Woodward each added an assist.
Christian Jackson and Roberto Toribio each spent a half in goal. Toribio had a save.
Newton hosts Derby at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
