SALINA — The Newton High School girls' golf team placed 10th Tuesday at the 14-team Salina South Invitational at the Salina Municipal Golf Course.
Maize won the meet at 318, 13 stroke better than Manhattan. Goddard Eisenhower was third at 332. Newton had a team score of 400.
"The girls played much better today, even though the wind made conditions tough and the greens had been recently aereated," Newton coach Joanie Pauls said. "The girls shot 43 strokes better than our last tournament."
Taelyn Entriken of Maize was top medalist at 67, two strokes better than Taryn Torgerson of Buhler. Newton was led by Lexi Pauls, who finished 12th at 85.
"Lexi finished 12th out of 76 golfers after shooting a personal best of 85," Joanie Pauls said. "She started off slowly triple bogeying her first hole, but she came back with 3 pars and a birdie on her next four holes. She putted well on the day, which helped her break 90 for the first time in competition."
Aly Browning shot a 95, followed by Sierah Schrag at 107, Alexis Martinez at 113, Hayley Cooper at 117 and London Orr-Thompson at 118.
"Aly posted a personal best of 95, and broke 100 for the first time," Joanie Pauls said. "Aly hit the ball great and could have broke 90 if her putting would have been a little better; she had eight three-putts during the round. Sierah and Alexis both had personal bests on the day. Sierah played well tee to green but lost some strokes with her putting. Alexis started on the back nine and struggled going out in 61. Her short game improved on the front nine and she was able to improve to a 52.
"Hayley and London both played well in spurts but had some big numbers on a few holes that drove their scores up. Its encouraging to see the girls' improvement as we head into the end of the regular season."
Newton plays Oct. 3 at the Hutchinson Invitational at Carey Park.
