HUTCHINSON — The Newton High School boys' cross country team placed second, while the Railer girls took fifth Thursday at the Buhler Invitational.

The Winfield boys won the meet at 48, followed by Newton at 112 and El Dorado at 125. Berean Academy was ninth at 195.

In the girls' competition, Valley Center won with 41 points, followed by Winfield at 90 and Berean Academy at 104. Newton scored 162 points.

The Newton boys were led by Thomas Kelso, who finished seventh in 18:22.0 (5,000 meters), followed by Robert Loeffler in 14th in 18:45.3, Samuel Blaufuss in 20th in 18:52.2, Jaecy Friesen in 31st in 19:25.9, Adrian Rogers in 44th in 19:53.6, Jason Granados in 49th in 20:06.4 and Jack Polley in 51st in 20:08.7.

For the Newton girls, Sadie Winter placed 14th in 16:50.2 (4,000 meters), followed by Ashlyn Glann in 25th in 17:30.9, Kasey Stucky in 33rd in 17:48.3, Elyse Bergquist in 43rd in 18:11.1, Ashley Akers in 56th in 18:53.4, Ashlynn Hamm in 57th in 18:53.9 and Juneuen Lujano in 81st in 20:34.9.

For the Berean Academy girls, Wendy Busenitz took 10th in 16:40.3, followed by Allison Topham in 15th in 16:51.4, Tiffany Wiebe in 21st in 17:11.4, Janet Busenitz in 27th in 17:36.3, Carissa Slabach in 37th in 17:58.5, Hannah Tangeman in 53rd in 18:41.6 and Carrie Unruh in 54th in 18:44.9.

For the Berean boys, Harrison Briscoe placed 11th in 18:34.7, followed by Matthew Wine in 19th in 18:51.5, Jason Funk in 39th in 19:42.2, Hunter Womack in 59th in 20:31.9, Caleb Slabach in 75th in 21:17.3, Ben Hirsch in 85th in 22:33.3 and Jathan Clark in 86th in 22:45.5.

Newton competes today at the McPherson Invitational and Saturday at the Rim Rock Classic in rural Lawrence. Berean hosts the Berean Academy Invitational Thursday at the Harvey County East Park.
