Newton splits

AV-CTL tri

MAIZE — The Newton High School volleyball team finished 1-1 Tuesday at an Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I triangular in Maize.

Newton downed Salina South 25-18, 25-14; and lost to host Maize 23-25, 25-14, 25-18.

"I felt like overall, we struggled to get started in each game tonight," Newton coach Jamie Dibbens said. "We never did get on track. We stuggled a lot with our hitting and with unforced errors. During the weekend, I felt like we took a step forward. Today, I felt like we took a step back. We have a young team and we're going to have our ups and downs."

Newton is 9-9, 3-1 in AV-CTL I play, and hosts the 10-team Newton Invitational Saturday.

Swathers sweep

home triangular

HESSTON — The Hesston High School volleyball team swept a home triangular Tuesday.

The Swathers downed Chapman 25-7, 25-15 in non-league play, and Smoky Valley 25-15, 25-20 in Central Kansas League play.

Smoky Valley downed Chapman 25-22, 25-22.

"It was a good night for us," Hesston coach Jason Peters said. "We hit and served well against Chapman, and were able to try some different options. Smoky Valley is always a tough opponent, but we got a lead early in the first set and were able to continue to put pressure on them with serving and aggressive attacks. The second set was close throughout with a few more errors on our side, but the girls kept their composure and made a run at the end to finish out the match."

Hesston is 13-2, 3-0 in CKL play. The Swathers play Tuesday at Halstead, facing Kingman and Haven.
