MAIZE — The Newton High School volleyball team placed fifth Saturday at the 10-team Maize Invitational.
The Railers finished 2-2 in pool play, taking third. Pool play scores were not reported.
In the semifinals, Newton downed Hutchinson 25-17, 19-25, 25-16. In the fifth-place match, Newton downed Maize 11-25, 25-23, 25-19.
The Railers are 8-8 and play at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Maize with Salina South.
NEWTON INVITATIONAL — Newton hosts the Newton Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday at Ravenscroft (two courts) and Willis gyms.
Teams in pool A are McPherson, Andover Central, Wichita Northwest, Hays and Salina South. Teams in pool B are Goddard Eisenhower, Andale, Newton, Wichita Heights and Buhler.
At 9 a.m., Newton plays Wichita Heights, Eisenhower plays Buhler and Andover Central plays Salina South.
The following matches will be played in order on the next available court:
Wichita Northwest vs. Hays, Andale vs. Buhler, McPherson vs. Salina South, Andover Central vs. Hays, Andale vs. Newton, Eisenhower vs. Wichita Heights and McPherson vs. Wichita Northwest.
After a 20-minute break, the following matches will be played in order on the next available court:
Wichita Northwest vs. Salina South, Newton vs. Buhler, McPherson vs. Hays, Andale vs. Wichita Heights, Andover Central vs. Wichita Northwest, Eisenhower vs. Newton, Hays vs. Salina South, Wichita Heights vs. Buhler, McPherson vs. Andover Central and Eisenhower vs. Andale.
After a 15-minute break, the two pool winners will meet for the championship match. The second-place finishers in each pool will meet for third place. The third-place finishers in each pool will meet for fifth place.
