PEABODY — Peabody-Burns opened up district play by making a statement — scoring every possible way in a 52-6 win over Burlingame.
"Our guys came out and wanted to dominate," said coach David Pickens. "This is a our first district game and we wanted to make a statement."
That statement came early — on the game's opening play. Senior Fred Winsor took the opening kickoff the length of the field for a touchdown for a quick lead.
"We came out and wanted to set the tone early and play well to the end," Winsor said.
Winsor finished the night with 60 yards rushing and three touchdowns. He had four touchdowns on the night. Some would say he was a one-man wrecking crew — but that would discount the complete domination Peabody-Burns put on display.
Braxton Kyle threw for 96 yards on 4 of 6 passing. Kevin Baatrup caught two passes for 60 yards.
And then there was defense and special teams — which put three touchdowns on the board. In addition to Winsor's opening salvo, the Warriors picked up a pick six when Kevin Baatrup returned an interception 40 yards at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter with the game teetering on over, Clayton Philpott scampered 50 yards on a free kick for a score.
The Warrior defense allowed just four first downs in the game and held Burlingame to 83 yards of offense. The defense was credited with a pair of sacks — and only allowed two pass completions.
"We just play well as a team," Winsor said.
The Warriors are now 3-0 and will host Canton-Galva for homecoming next week.
