    compete at meet
SHAWNEE MISSION — The Newton High School gymnastics team competed Saturday at the Shawnee Mission North Invitational.
"Kailey Naysmith tied for third on beam and placed fifth all-around," Newton coach JoAnne Thaw said. "It was good to see where we are at this point and see how much work we have to do before the next meet. We scored less than at our first meet, but we lost a lot on falls on the beam. We had one no-fall beam routine at this meet compared to four at our home meet. Sticking our routines is quite important. We would have been up about 2 1/2 points without falls on beam and another point without falls on bars which would also move us up in the team placings. Vault and floor look good, but we need to up our difficulty and that should happen by our next meet."
    Newton competes Tuesday at Olathe.
