    team wins
    GODDARD — The Newton High School boys' soccer team opened play in the Goddard Invitational with a 4-0 win over Winfield at Goddard District Stadium.
    Carlos Reyes scored two goals for the Railers. Jairo Santos and Frank Vasquez each added a goal.
    Newton improves to 3-0-1 and plays in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Thursday against Goddard, which downed Arkansas City 6-0.
    Bethel women
    claim win
    The Bethel College women's soccer team claimed its first win of the season, stopping Central Christian College 2-0 Tuesday at Joe W. Goering Field.
    Nichole Gabriel and Brooke Banning each scored a goal for the Threshers.
    Madison Wiles had four saves in goal for the clean sheet. Bethel outshot the Tigers 16-5.
    The Threshers are 1-3 and play at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Gregory's.

    STERLING — The team of Swede Osbourn, Greg Osbourn and Dick Edwards won the championship flight of a tournament held recently at the Sterling Country Club.
    The team had a score of 56, 15 under par.

    stops Southeast
    ELBING — The Berean Academy soccer team downed Wichita Southeast 4-0 Tuesday in Elbing.
    David Ladwig scored a goal with two assists for Berean. Logan Veer, Colton Leinbach and Tyler Busenitz each scored a goal for the Warriors. Collin Smith had an assist.
    Dallas Wiebe had three saves in goal for the shutout win.
    Berean is 2-1 and plays at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Andover.

    Wingnuts fall
    in finals opener
    GARY, Ind. — The Wichita Wingnuts fell to the Gary SouthShore Railcats 9-4 Tuesday in the opening game of the best-of-five American Association championship series.
    Wichita led 4-3 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but gave up four runs in the bottom of the seventh and two more in the bottom of the eighth.
    Adam Klein drove in three runs for Gary. Danial Pulfer went two for five with two RBIs. Mike Massaro went three for five with an RBI, Brian Kolb went two for four with an RBI. Nick Liles and Zac Mitchell each drove in a run. Cristian Guerrero went three for five hitting. Reid Fronk went two for four hitting.
    For Wichita, Jake Kahaulelio hit a three-run home run. David Amberson went four for four hitting with an RBI.
    Will Krout posted the win for the Railcats. James Giulietti took the loss for Wichita.
    Game two is 7:10 p.m. today in Gary.
