SALINA — The Newton High School girls' golf team placed seventh Tuesday at the nine-team Salina Central Invitational at the Salina Municipal Golf Course.
Manhattan topped Hays 178-185 for the team title. Salina Central was third at 196, followed by Concordia at 199, Great Bend at 205, Hutchinson at 208, Newton at 215, Clay Center at 219 and Salina South at 223.
Newton was led by Lexi Pauls, who shot a 47 and won a scorecard playoff for 10th place. Sierra Schrag was six strokes off medal contention at 53, followed by Aly Browning at 55, London Orr-Thompson at 60, Alexis Martinez at 61 and Hayley Cooper at 62.
"Lexi won a scorecard playoff for 10th place," Newton coach Joanie Pauls said. "She hit the ball great off the tee and had the chance to shoot even lower. She had a couple of holes where her mental game around the greens let her down. Sierah turned in her personal best with a 53, which was 17 strokes lower than her score last week at Sand Creek. She hit her driver much better today. Aly played more consistent today andwas able to eliminate big numbers on holes. She was able to cut eight strokes from last week.
"London and Alexis both struggled with their putting. Some of the greens have subtle breaks and they both had difficulty getting the right speed on their putts. Hayley played in her first varsity meet today. She hit the ball well at times, but had a few bad holes that drove her score up. As a team we continue to give away too many strokes with our short game. We will continue to focus on putting in practice."
Newton competes Thursday at the Winfield Invitational at the Winfield Country Club.
"Winfield Country Club is a tight course with lots of trees," Joanie Pauls said. "It will give us a chance to work on course management."
