HESSTON — After the Hesston Swathers shut out rival Halstead Friday night to open the high school football season, running back Ryan Schadler summed up the 20-0 win with one word.
"Redemption," Schadler said.
He could have left it at that and let his statistics do the talking. Schadler ran for 161 yards on just 16 carries, scoring two touchdowns. He also added a pair of catches for 48 yards in the win.
But had a few more words as well.
"We wanted to come in and prove that last year was a fluke, and this is our biggest rival," Schadler said.
One year ago Halstead was able to get a 32-26 win over Hesston.
But this year was different. Hesston used a new offense, including a no-huddle look, and took an early lead. The defense responded with a shutout.
Schadler scored the first two touchdowns of the game — a run of 47 yards with 6:09 left in the first quarter and another 37 yard scamper with 7:56 left in the second.
He appeared to break the game wide open on a punt return for a score in the second quarter, but the play was called back on a penalty.
"We have to clean it up," said coach Clint Rider.
Hesston did add another tally in the second quarter when Wyatt McKinney hooked up with Justin Smith on a 10 yard pass play with 1:33 left in the half. Halstead blocked the extra point.
Neither team was able to score again.
"Wyatt threw the ball really well, and Smith had some big catches," Rider said. "Defensively I thought Christian Graber had an amazing game. He was everywhere."
McKinney finished the night 14 of 20 for 279 yards passing with one touchdown and one interception.
For Halstead Joseph Myers led the offense, running for 108 yards on 25 carries.
Hesston, now 1-0, will host defending league champion Nickerson next week. Halstead, now 0-1, will host Lyons.
