  • Meals on Wheels The following is the Meals on Wheels menu for Sunday, Sept. 8, through Saturday, Sept. 14. Items for people with diabetes are listed in parentheses.
    Sunday — Roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, tropical fruit, roll, ice cream, jelly (sugar-free ice cream).
    Monday — Ham loaf, baked potato wedges, scalloped apples, roll, white cake, jelly, (angelfood cake), milk.
    Tuesday — Beef stroganoff, noodles, broccoli, plums, oatbran muffin, jelly, (sugar-free jelly), milk.
    Wednesday — Sweet and sour chicken breast, rice, California vegetables, fruit cocktail, roll, jelly, milk.
    Thursday — Baked pork chop, mashed potatoes and brown gravy, carrots, pineapple, roll, oatmeal raisin cookie, jelly, (graham crackers), milk.
    Friday — Sloppy joe, bun, french fries, mixed vegetables, pears, milk.
    Saturday — Baked chicken, mashed potatoes and chicken gravy, succotash, mandarin oranges, roll, milk.
    Those interested in receiving meals should call 283-3500. The meals are prepared by Newton Medical Center and are delivered by volunteers seven days a week, including holidays. Diabetic diets are served when ordered by a physician.
    The American Red Cross Good Neighbor Nutrition Program meals served at the Newton Area Senior Center, 122 E. Sixth will be:
    Sept. 9 — Meatloaf with tomato sauce; herbed potatoes; pickled beets; rosy applesauce; whole wheat bread;
    Sept. 10 — Beef gumbo soup; macaroni salad w/carrots; strawberry pears; sugar cookies; crackers
    Sept. 11 — Chicken cacciatore; garden rice pilaf; spinach salad with dressing; quick fruit cup; whole wheat roll
    Sept. 12 — Ham and beans with onions; carrot coins; fruited gelatin; cornbread
    Sept. 13 — Taco salad; yellow sweet corn; pineapple ambrosia
    Contributions are encouraged. The suggested contribution for a meal for those age 60 and older is $2. However, no person will be denied a meal due to an inability to pay. (The meal for each day’s volunteers is provided.) Reservations must be made with the site manager or the Senior Center director at 283-2222 three weekdays before the meal.
