    2-4 at AV-CTL
    HUTCHINSON — The Newton High School volleyball team opened the season with a 2-4 record at the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I-II Classic Saturday in Hutchinson.
    Newton lost to Andover Central 27-25, 23-25, 26-24; beat Campus 25-22, 25-17; lost to Andover 25-18, 25-17; lost to top-ranked (Class 4A) McPherson 25-8, 25-15; lost to Salina Central 25-18, 25-16; and beat Salina South 25-19, 25-21.
    Newton is 2-4 and plays at 4 p.m. today at Garden City with Salina Central.

    HILLSBORO — The Hesston High School volleyball team finished third Saturday at the Central Kansas League pre-season tournament in Hillsboro.
    "We had a strong showing for our first matches of the season," Hesston coach Jason Peters said. "It was a challenge to play five matches on a hot day without air-conditioned gyms, but the girls responded well and showed that they should be one of the top contenders in the league this season."
    In pool play, Hesston downed Smoky Valley 25-16, 25-19; and Larned 25-16, 25-17.
    In the bracket semifinals, Hesston downed Harvey County rival Halstead 25-16, 25-15. In the semifinals, Hesston fell to top-seeded Hillsboro 25-20, 20-25, 25-17. In the third-place match, Hesston downed Hoisington 25-14, 28-26.
    Ali Jost had 45 kills for the day, followed by Cami Richardson with 31, Kelsey Unruh with 25, Megan Voth with 20, Jessana Nebel with 16 and Hannah Schmitt with 14.
    Schmitt had 11 blocks, followed by Unruh with six, Nebel with six, Voth with five and Jost with five.
    Voth dished out 113 assists, followed by Nebel with 12.
    Voth and Schmitt each served seven aces. Esau had six.
    Jost had 32 digs, followed by Schmitt with 30, Esau with 28, Voth with 28 and Richardson with 26.
    Voth was 100 percent serving, followed by Voth at 98 percent.
    Hesston, 4-1, plays at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Moundridge with Conway Springs.
    Halstead finished 1-1 in pool play, falling to Pratt 25-11, 25-12; and beating Lyons 25-14, 25-20.
    After the loss to Hesston in the quarterfinals, Halstead beat Haven 25-18, 21-25, 27-25. In the consolation finals, Halstead lost to Sterling 25-22, 25-16.
    Halstead, 2-3, plays at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Burrton with St. John-Hudson.

    WICHITA — The Wichita Wingnuts ended the regular season with a 5-4 win over the Kansas City T-Bones Monday at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
    Wichita set American Association records for wins (68), winning percentage (.680) and team earned-run-average (3.38).
    Abel Nieves won the league batting title at .357. C.J. Ziegler set the league record for home runs in a season at 30 and led the league in RBIs at 99.
    Jake Kakaulelio went four for four hitting for Wichita with two RBIs. Ziegler and Cole Armstrong each added an RBI. Nieves went two for four.
    James Giulietti, 4-0, pitched five innings for the win, allowing two earned runs on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Andrew Aizenstadt pitched the ninth inning for the save, his first of the season.
    Luis Rivera went two for three hitting for Kansas City. Felix Molina drove in two runs. Anthony Davis went two for four hitting with an RBI. Steve Woo added an RBI.
    Josh Hildebrand, 2-3, took the loss for the T-Bones, 40-60.
    Wichita ends the regular season 68-32. The Wingnuts open a best-of-five American Association semifinal series against Grand Prairie Wednesday in Grand Prairie.
