Meals on Wheels

The following is the Meals on Wheels menu for Sunday, Sept. 1, through Saturday, Sept. 7. Items for people with diabetes are listed in parentheses.

Sunday — Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes, gravy, lima beans, pineapple, roll, ice cream, (sugar-free ice cream), milk.

Monday — Country sausage on a bun, baked potato wedges, corn, applesauce, milk.

Tuesday — Chicken and dumplings, peas, mandarin oranges and bananas, oatmeal raisin cokie, (vanilla wafers), milk.

Wednesday — Spaghetti and meatsauce, Italian mix vegetables, peaches, garlic bread, chocolate cake, (angelfood cake), milk.

Thursday — Smothered pork cutlet, noodles, beets, pears, roll, tapioca pudding, (sugar-free pudding), milk.

Friday — Chicken strips, mashed potatoes and chicken gravy, creamed peas, apricots, roll, vanilla wafers, milk.

Saturday — Fish nuggets, hash browns, cabbage, banana, roll, graham crackers, jelly, milk.

Those interested in receiving meals should call 283-3500. The meals are prepared by Newton Medical Center and are delivered by volunteers seven days a week, including holidays. Diabetic diets are served when ordered by a physician.


The American Red Cross Good Neighbor Nutrition Program meals served at the Newton Area Senior Center, 122 E. Sixth will be:

Sept. 2 — Closed for labor day

Sept. 3 — Italian chicken casserole; California vegetables; pineapple chunks; vanilla pudding; whole wheat bread

Sept. 4 — Pork patties with cream gravy; mashed potatoes; loose leaf salad with dressing; harvest fruit mix; dinner roll

Sept. 5 — Liver and onions; creamy scalloped potatoes; ranch broccoli salad; tropical fruit mix; whole wheat bread

Sept. 6 — Chicken salad on wheat; macaroni salad with carrots; fresh orange; chocolate pudding

Contributions are encouraged. The suggested contribution for a meal for those age 60 and older is $2. However, no person will be denied a meal due to an inability to pay. (The meal for each day’s volunteers is provided.) Reservations must be made with the site manager or the Senior Center director at 283-2222 three weekdays before the meal.
