The Harvey County Dept. on Aging has a voucher program for seniors on a fixed income, enabling them to eat healthy foods from farmers markets.
People over 60 who meet income eligibility requirements can use the vouchers to buy fresh fruit, vegetables, herbs and honey. Wenda Black, program specialist with the department on aging, said the office has handed out 85 vouchers this summer.
Not every vendor at farmers markets will accept the vouchers. Those who do should have a sign saying so at their tables. Black said she knows of at least two vendors in Newton who accept them.
The Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program is a USDA program, administered in Kansas by the Kansas Dept. of Health and Environment.
Applications for the voucher program are available locally, only at the department of aging office at the Harvey County Courthouse. For further information about the program, call the dept. on aging at (316) 284-6880.
