HESSTON — The Hesston College men's soccer team opened the season with a 3-0 loss to Crowder College Saturday at the HC soccer field.

All three goals came in the first half. Daniel Collins, Brantley Gossett and Joe Rice each scored a goal for the 2-0 Roughriders. Kenlley Leyendeckers had two assists.

Gustav Kinnestig had the shutout in goal for Crowder.

Hesston hosts Neosho County Community College at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Royals down

Tampa Bay

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Royals claimed an 11-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays Monday in a make-up game at Kauffman Stadium.

Salvador Perez hit a three-run home run and added a sacrifice fly for four RBIs for the Royals. Billy Butler went three for three hitting with a home run and three RBIs. Mike Moustakas drove in two runs. Alex Gordon went two for four with an RBI. Justin Maxwell also drove in a run. Emilio Bonifico went three for five hitting.

Kansas City starter Jeremy Guthrie lasted five innings for the win. Guthrie allowed a run on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

Matt Joyce went three for three to lead Tampa Bay. Jeremy Hellickson, 10-8, took the loss for the Rays.

Kansas City wins its second straight to improve to 66-64. Tampa Bay falls to 74-55, Kansas City is 11 games behind Detroit in the AL Central and 6 1/2 games behind the Rays in the wild card race.

Kansas City opens a three-game series at Minnesota beginning at 7:10 p.m. today.
