Health Ministries announces executive director
The Health Ministries Clinic Board of Directors has appointed Matthew Schmidt as executive director.
Schmidt, a licensed specialist clinical social worker, served the clinic as interim executive director for the past year.
Citing the last 12 months as one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of his professional career, he said, "I am extremely excited about the future of Health Ministries. I am very appreciative of all the energy that staff have invested that has allowed us to get where we are and at the same time am eager to continue to press on and maximize what we can be! I look forward to the journey that lies ahead."
Schmidt will continue to help lead a health-care integration project between Health Ministries Clinic, Prairie View and the Harvey County Health Department. When completed, primary care, dental services, behavioral health care and public health will be able to be accessed in one location, making it significantly easier for individuals and families to obtain comprehensive health services.
Currently, Health Ministries Clinic provides the following specific types of care: acute care, disease prevention and management, wellness management, children's care, dental care and behavioral health assessments and consultations. In-house lab services are also available.
Hours of operation are: Monday and Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Friday, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. The dental clinic is open Monday and Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Tuesday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Health Ministries Clinic, a federally-qualified health center, provides medical, dental and counseling services for the insured and uninsured in Harvey, Marion, McPherson and Butler counties regardless of patients’ ability to pay. Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance are accepted. Same-day appointments are available.
Local doctor recognized as diplomate of ABFM
Family physician Jon Casimir, MD, has successfully completed the necessary requirements for recognition as a diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine. This recognizes the physician demonstrates a mastery level of medical knowledge and excellence in family medicine.
To become a diplomate, Dr. Casimir had to complete specific requirements outlined by the ABFM, including passing a cognitive examination.
Dr. Casimir practices at Via Christi Clinic, 720 Medical Center Drive in Newton. Appointments can be made by calling 284-5000.

HCU named a top mortgage granting credit union
The American Credit Union Mortgage Association has recently named Hutchinson Credit Union as one of the Top 300 First Mortgage Granting Credit Unions in the country. HCU was the only credit union from the state of Kansas to make the list and ranked No. 280 nationally.
The data used to determine the rankings was based on the total number of first mortgage originations and total dollars of first mortgage originations from Jan. 1, 2012, through Dec. 31, 2012. ACUMA’s data shows HCU originated more than $85 million in 1,296 fixed and adjustable rate first mortgages.
"It is an honor for Hutchinson Credit Union to be included among the top first mortgage granting credit unions in the country," a news release stated.
