HAYS — The Newton Senior Knights have advanced to the consolation semifinals of the Kansas American Legion Baseball Class AAA State Tournament after a 10-7 win over Emporia Friday night at Larks Park in Salina.

Earlier in the day, Newton downed Garden City. Scoring details of that game were not available at press time.

Newton scored two runs in the first inning and two more in the second to take a 4-0 lead. Emporia came back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but Newton replied with four more runs in the fifth inning.

Emporia answered back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and a run in the seventh. Newton scored a run in the eighth and another in the ninth.

Emporia came back with two runs in the bottom of the ninth.

Newton plays Pittsburg at noon. That winner faces host Hays in the championship game at 3 p.m. If the Newton-Pittsburg winner beats Hays, a second championship game will be at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Keil Stauffer had three hits for Newton. Gunar Drinnen and Austin Resser each had two doubles. Peyton Dahl and Dakota Long each drove in two runs. Stauffer, Drinnen and Dakota Stein each had an RBI

Reagan McCloud was credited for the win in relief of Jacob Fulmer. Drinnen closed out the game. McCloud struck out two.

Cody Swanson had four hits and two RBIs for Emporia. Nick Nelson added three hits and two RBIs. Austin Gordon took the loss for Emporia.
