  • SEDGWICK — Thick clouds of dark, billowing smoke filled the skies above Sedgwick Tuesday morning as emergency crews rushed to the scene of a major fire at a biodiesel plant in the small town.
Although the fire appeared to have completely destroyed a building, firefighters were able to contain the blaze and no injuries have been reported.
Several explosions were reported at the Green Energy Products facility after 8 a.m. Tuesday. About a dozen people were thought to be inside the building when the fire started, but they were able to get out safely.
The building was still filled with flames about two hours after the incident began, and the plant was reportedly continuing to burn slowly into Tuesday afternoon as crews worked to keep tanks on the outside of the building cool.
Firefighters used foam to put out the flames. Crews from the town of Sedgwick, Halstead, Newton and Sedgwick County responded to the scene, and McConnell Air Force Base also sent in trucks carrying foam to help fight the flames.
The cause of the incident remains under investigation.
