WICHITA — The Wichita Wingnuts opened a three-game homestand against the Amarillo Sox with a 4-0 loss Monday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in Wichita.
Amarillo scored a run in the third inning on a two-out Jorge Delgado single. Trey Ford hit a two-run home run with one out in the top of the fourth inning. K.C. Serna hit an RBI single with two outs in the sixth inning.
Amarillo's Joe Newby pitched eight innings for the win, allowing five hits, three walks and three strikeouts. Erik Draxton pitched the ninth, striking out one.
Ryan Scoles took the loss for Wichita. Joshua Stone, Nick Walters, Daniel Bennett and Andrew Aizenstadt each threw an inning.
Delgado finished two for three hitting for Amarillo. Jason Martin drew three walkls.
Wichita's C.J. Ziegler went two for four at the plate.
Wichita is 42-21. Amarillo is 33-26. The two teams meet again at 7:05 p.m. today.
WICHITA MAKES MOVES — The Wingnuts signed rookie outfielder Jonathan Davis and bought the contract of catcher Johnny Bowden from Rio Grande Valley of the United League.
Davis recently finished his collegiate play at Kansas State, where he his .302 his senior year. Davis had five home runs, 14 doubles, 42 RBIs, 10 stolen bases and 49 runs scored in 63 games. He helped lead Kansas State to an NCAA Super Regional berth. A native of Juneau, Alaska, Davis spent a season at California-Davis.
Bowden played 39 games for Rio Grande Valley this season, hitting .318 with 22 runs scored, seven doubles and nine RBIs. Bowden drew 33 walks and struck out 28 times. Bowden split the 2011 season between the Kansas City T-Bones and Gary SouthShore. He played collegiately at the University of Southern California. He was drafted by Colorado in the 41st round in 2007.
Wichita released catched Scott Dalrymple and placed outfielder David Amberson on the inactive list because of injury.
SMITH NAMED TOP PITCHER — Wingnuts pitcher Chris Smith was named the American Association pitcher of the week for the week ending Sunday.
Smith was 2-0 for the week with a 0.61 earned-run-average. He struck out nine in eight innings in a 2-0 win over Sioux City. He held Lincoln to three hits Sunday, striking out 12, one shy of a club record.
Smith is 7-3 for the season with a 3.40 ERA. He is the fifth Wichita player this season to earn weekly league honors.

INDIANAPOLIS — Kansas State High School Activities Association executive director Gary Musselman was named to the board of directors for the National Federation of High School Associations.
Page 2 of 2 - He will represent Section V, which includes Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Missouri, Nebraska and Kansas. He will serve a four-year term.
Musselman is a former Halstead High School coach. He also held coaching postions at Andover and Beloit. He is a former principal at LaCrosse High School.
