    The Newton Junior Knights didn't allow many hits against McPherson in the Kansas American Legion Class A (junior), Zone 5 Tournament Wednesday at Klein-Scott Field.
    Walks and hit batters nearly did the Junior Knights in. Newton jumped to a 4-0 lead, but held on for a 5-3 win.
    In elimination games, Salina downed Clearwater 9-5 and McPherson downed Winfield 10-2 in five innings on the eight-run rule.
    Two walks, an error and a Jack Kingsley double led to two Newton runs in the top of the first inning. Drake Sturgeon hit an RBI triple and scored on a ground out in the top of the third.
    McPherson got back in the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. All with two outs, McPherson drew three walks and had two hit batters to score two runs.
    McPherson broke the no-hitter in the bottom of the fifth when Cody Starkel hit an RBI single. McPherson left a runner in scoring position.
    A single, a walk, a balk and a Chazz Martinez sacrifice fly led to a Newton run in the top of the seventh. Newton's Regan McCloud pitched the bottom of the seventh for the save, walking one and retiring three.
    Cole Koerner posted the win for Newton in relief of Garrett Davis. Koerner allowed no hits in 3 2-3 innings, but allowed two runs on four walks with five strikeouts. Koerner allowed a run on two hits in 2 1-3 innings.
    Cole Sturgeon went two for three hitting. Kingsley drove in two runs.
    Griffin Myers took the loss for McPherson. Nelson Steinert finished the game.
    In the opening game of the day, the Salina Eagles took the lead with a five-run third inning on two hits. Salina added two runs in the fourth.
    Clearwater took advantage of walks and errors to score four runs. Salina came back with two runs in the top of the seventh. Clearwater scored a run in the bottom of the seventh.
    Tyler Short went 4 2-3 innings for Salina for the win, striking out seven. Jacob Yarochowicz finished the game, striking out four.
    Jacob Foster went two for four hitting for Salina.
    Clearwater starter Cody Lill took the loss.
    In the late game, McPherson took a 2-1 lead over Winfield in the bottom of the second inning, scoring two runs on three hits. Mike Kent tied the game for Winfield with a two-out RBI single in the top of the third.
    McPherson struck back in the bottom of the third inning with four runs on one hit. McPherson added three runs in the fourth and a run in the fifth to end the game.
    It was the first game of the tournament where the team that scored first lost.
    Page 2 of 3 - Marcus McDaniel went the distance for McPherson, allowing two runs on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Lucas McMichael took the loss for Winfield. Jacob Byerley finished the game.
    Kolby Reed went three for three hitting for McPherson. Reed, Jacob Loecker and Grant Barrett each drove in two runs. Tim Rubel drew a pinch-hit, bases loaded walk to end the game.
    Kent went two for three hitting for Winfield.
    In today's games, Salina meets McPherson at 3 p.m. in an elimination game, followed by Newton against Andover Central in the championship semifinals. The Salina-McPherson winner meets the Andover Central-Newton loser in the consolation semifinals at about 7 p.m.
