WHAT IT IS: The amount of money the city of Newton allocated to the Newton Lions Club for the 2013 fireworks display. The city's public information officer, Erin McDaniel, reports this is the same amount the city was giving to the Chisholm Trail Festival for fireworks in past years.
PUBLIC/PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP: The Lions Club hosted the event, taking over the show last year when it was in jeopardy. The city funding covered the entire cost of the fireworks this year, but all other event costs were covered by the Lions Club and by private donations. The event also included a performance by Bethel College Academy of Performing Arts and concessions.
WHO PAYS FOR INSURANCE: The Lions Club has its own liability insurance, as does the fireworks vendor and pyrotechnician, McDaniel said. The city was not involved in the show other than providing funding.
FUTURE OF THE FIREWORKS: In the City Commission’s initial budget discussions for 2014, fireworks funding has not been included. The public display could be cut due to budget constraints and rising costs for other city services.
