GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas — Christopher Smith pitched 7 2-3 innings, allowing just one run as the Wichita Wingnuts downed the Grand Prairie AirHogs 6-2 Friday in American Association play at QuickTrip Field.
Smith, 4-3, walked four and struck out seven. Andrew Aizenstadt struck out a batter to end the eighth inning, Josh Dew gave up a run on a hit with a strikeout in the ninth.
Wichita scored two runs in the first inning on an RBI single by John Rodriguez and a fielder's choice from Abel Nieves, which scored a run. Wichita added a run in the fifth inning on a Jake Kahaulelio RBI double. Wichita wrapped up the win with three runs in the eighth inning on RBI singles by Nieves, Cole Armstrong and Colt Loehrs.
Ryan Khoury, Kahaulelio and Nieves all went two for four hitting. Rodriguez and C.J. Ziegler both went two for five.
For Grand Prairie, Jorge Lugo took the loss, going seven innings. Lugo allowed three runs on seven hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
Ryan Pineda had both AirHog RBIs. Yasutsugu Nishimoto went two for four hitting.
Wichita is 29-18, while Grand Prairie is 26-19. The series continues today.
