The Newton Rebels split a twinbill against the Kansas Cannons Wednesday night in Walter Johnson League play at Klein-Scott Field.
In the first game, Newton scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to claim a 6-5 win. The Cannons came back to win the nightcap 5-1.
In the first game, Ben Coudret had two RBIs. Toby Cornejo and Evan Thomas each added an RBI. Nick Kolley and Anthony Quiles each had two hits.
Storm Marlar went 6 2-3 innings, striking out four. Tyler Bishop recorded a strikeout for the final out in the top of the seventh to claim the win.
Seth Geohegan took the loss for the Cannons in relief of Garrett Stockton and Tyler Price.
Ryan Snyder had three hits for the Cannons.
In the second game, Kyle Burkhart went the distance for the Cannons, allowing a run on two hits with 10 strikeouts. Craig Bastert took the loss for Newton. Alec Stahly finished the game.
Newton scored in the top of the first, but the Cannons came back to tie the game in the third inning, putting it away with three runs in the fifth and a run in the sixth.
J.C. Sturgeon had four hits and two RBIs for Kansas. Brandon Landanger added two hits with an RBI. Snyder also had two hits.
Newton is 16-14 overall and 15-14 in WJL play. Newton hosts Park City at 7 p.m. today for a WJL doubleheader.
