  • Strong start leads to Rebel win

    The Newton Rebels used a five-run first inning to get past the Hutchinson Monarchs 8-2 Tuesday in Walter Johnson League play at Klein-Scott Field.
    Newton added three runs in the third inning. Hutchinson scored a run each in the fifth and seventh innings.
    Ethan Peacock pitched five innings for the win for Newton, allowing no earned runs on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Nathan Briar finished the game, allowing a run on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
    Nick Kolley led the Rebel offense, going two for three hitting with two runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Grant Dunnegan also drove in two runs. Anthony Quiles, Cooper Langley and Trent Brisboe each drove in a run.
    For Hutchinson, Zackary Leighton went three for three hitting. Zennon Kolakowski went two for four with an RBI. Jordan Ollenberger also drove in a run.
    Hutchinson starter Zach Richert took the loss. Junior Mustain and Jean Acevedo also pitched.
    Hutchinson falls to 16-15, 16-14 in league play. Newton is 15-13, 14-13 in WJL play. Newton hosts the Kansas Cannons at 6 p.m. today in a league doubleheader.
