The Newton Junior Knights got as much practice in Saturday as the team did game time in a 15-0 win over the Wichita East Aces at Klein-Scott Field.
East was late arriving, so the teams decided to play just one game. The game was called after three innings.
"Our plate approach was pretty good today," Newton manager Mark George said. "Our guys weren't chasing too many bad pitches. We were driving pitches where we needed to. It came down to who was throwing strikes. Junior Legion is an arms race. We happened to win the arms race. They probably weren't ready to play. They had guys still coming in at the first pitch."
Garrett Davis went the distance for Newton to pick up the win. Davis allowed two hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Newton's defense committed just one error.
The Newton offense was led by Cole Sturgeon with two hits in two tries. Newton had just eight hits in the game, aided by walks, wild pitches and an East error.
Newton scored seven runs in the first inning and eight in the second.
"Not really a whole lot to take away from a day like today except we did get in a quality practice," George said. "We got a lot of things covered like bunt coverage. We worked on our cut off plays. It was a really nice day with the weather."
Newton lost to McPherson 10-9 last week. The second game of the doubleheader was rained out. Newton was down 7-4 going into the ninth. The Knights scored five runs in the top of the ninth to take the lead, but loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the inning, allowing McPherson to come back.
"We did a great job of getting back in the game," George said. "That's been the way we've played all year. We got ourselves in a predicament in the bottom of the seventh that was hard to get out of. We needed to do a little bit better job of throwing strikes. Garrett Davis did a good job in relief for us, throwing strikes. We have a lot of tools and capabilities. The more consistent we are, the better we'll do."
Newton is 14-4 and plays Friday at El Dorado.
