ANAHEIM — Newton High grad Dustin Richardson returned to professional baseball, signing with the Los Angeles Angels June 15.
He was assigned to the Angels' Class AAA affiliate, the Salt Lake City Bees, where he has appeared in five games. He has pitched in 6 1-3 innings, allowing no earned runs on two hits with five walks and seven strikeouts.
He earned his first win with the Bees June 23 against the Las Vegas 51s.
Richardson, 29, was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the fifth round of the 2006 free agent draft. He reached the Majors with Boston in 2009. He was traded to Florida in November of 2010. He was claimed off waivers June 22, 2011, by Atlanta.
He was suspended 50 games on Jan. 25, 2012, for violating the MLB performance enhancing substance policy and was waived by Atlanta.
He played 23 games last year and six games this year with the Sugar Land Skeeters of the independent Atlantic League, where he was 1-0 with a 3.18 earned-run-average, walking 14 and striking out 31.
Richardson has played in 193 affiliated minor league games, where he is 30-22 with a 4.01 ERA, 10 saves and 508 strikeouts. He has played in 29 Major League games, where he has a 3.31 ERA and 12 strikeouts.
SALINA — The Newton Rebels split a pair of games against the North Central Knights Sunday evening at Dean Evans Stadium in Walter Johnson League play.
Newton won the first game 6-0 and lost the nightcap 3-2.
In the first game, Josh Markel pitched six innings, allowing eight hits with no walks and a strikeout. Cameron Clements pitched the seventh inning, striking out two batters.
Newton scored a run in the top of the third, and broke the game open with five runs in the sixth.
Newton's Storm Marlar went two for two hitting with an RBI. Justin Harris went two for four with an RBI. Toby Cornejo and Ben Courdret each added an RBI.
Jackson Rolfs went 5 2-3 innings for North Central, taking the loss. Jackson gave up two earned runs on three hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Cooper Brown and Jay Nelson finished the game.
Andy Gehr went two for three hitting for the Knights. Lucas Stone went two for four.
In the second game, tied 1-1 after four innings, the Knights scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Newton added a run in the top of the seventh, but left the tying run on base.
Wade Myatt went the distance for North Central for the win, allowing one earned run on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Newton starter Dylan Gadberry went four innings, allowing a run on six hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Alec Stahly finished the game and took the loss, allowing one earned run on two hits.
Evan Thomas went two for four hitting with an RBI. Chris Pinne went two for three. Stone and Cole Davis each drove in a run for North Central. Sam Vogel and Tyler Nelson each went two for three hitting.
The Rebels win the regular-season series against the Knights 4-2. Newton is 14-13, 13-13 in WJL play. Newton plays at 7 p.m. today at Hutchinson.
