With a live rail line going through Sand Creek Station, The Railer, the Kansas Golf Association stroke-play championships lives up to its name.
The tournament drew 140 players to the opening round on Friday.
Chase Hanna of Leawood takes the first round lead in the open division, while Steve Newman of Wichita leads the senior division.
Hanna, a recent graduate of Shawnee Mission East High School and a University of Kansas signee, shot a four-under par 68 to lead the tournament by one stroke.
Hanna shot seven birdies (2, 4, 9, 11, 15, 16 and 18), one bogey and one double bogey.
Hanna is coming off a win at the KGA Junior Amateur Boys' Championships. He placed eighth in the Class 6A state tournament last spring, helping to lead Shawnee Mission East to a second-place team finish.
Sam Stevens of Wichita, a senior to be at Kapaun-Mt. Carmel and the defending Class 5A champion, is one stroke back at 69. Stevens had five birdies (6, 8, 9, 11 and 16) and two bogeys (3 and 4) in the first round.
David Auer, a sophomore at the University of Kansas and a Kapaun grad, is third at 70. Four players are tied for fourth at 71.
Newton High grad Lane Pauls, a Kansas City (Kan.) Community College signee, is tied for 44th at 78.
In the senior division, Newman shot a 69, and is three strokes better than Randy Vantravers of Andover. Don Kuehn of Kansas City, Mo., and Doug Kaup of Phillipsburg are tied for third at 73.
Newman is the defending senior division champion. He also is the defending KGA Mid-Amateur and Senior Amateur champion.
Starting on hole 10, Newman was three under after his first nine holes, but suffered bogeys on one and three. Birdies on five and nine kept him at three under for the first round.
The start of Friday's round was delayed by 45 minutes because of the storms Thursday night. Today's second round begins at 7:30 a.m., with the last groups starting at 2:15 p.m.
