SALINA — The Newton Senior Knights dropped a 9-3 decision to the Salina Falcons in American Legion baseball play Monday night at Dean Evans Stadium in Salina.

Salina scored seven runs in the first inning and two more in the fourth, holding off the Knights the rest of the way.

Newton scored two runs in the fifth and one in the seventh.

Trent Early and Keenan Breen each went two for four hitting for Salina, driving in two runs each. Dane Long also drove in two runs. Matt Rowe went two for five hitting. Conney Boyer, Dalton Dooley and Bailey Ramsey each added an RBI.

For Newton, Austin Resser drove in two runs. Gunar Drinnen went two for five with an RBI.

Newton starter Peyton Dahl took the loss for Newton. Drinnen struck out four batters in five innings. Dakota Stein and Wyatt Burbrink each pitched an inning of shutout ball.

Josh Dolan went two innings for Salina for the win in relief of starter Daniel O'Brien. Jared Winter, Dilon Hopkins and Conner Boyle also pitched.

Saturday and Sunday, Newton played in the Bob Hooper Memorial Tournament in McPherson, winning the title.

Newton downed Buhler 11-3 in the championship game. Scores and details of Newton's pool games against Junction City and Nickerson, along with the semifinals, were not available.

Newton hosts the Falcons again at 6 p.m. Thursday at Klein-Scott Field for a doubleheader.

Laredo Lemurs

WICHITA — Lemurs may be portrayed in animated movies as cute little critters, but they didn't put up much of a fight in a 20-6 loss to the Wichita Wingnuts Monday in American Association play at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

The Wingnuts posted 17 hits. C.J. Ziegler and Brent Clevlen each had two home runs, driving in seven and five runs repectively. Ryan Khory drove in four runs. John Rodriguez drove in two runs. Colt Loehrs had four hits.

John Allen and Harrison Kain each had three hits for Laredo. Palmer Karr hit a solo home run. Garrett Buechele drove in three runs.

Wichita did most of its damage early, scoring nine runs in the fourth inning to lead 16-0.

Ryan Hinson, 6-1, went six innings for the win, allowing no runs on five hits with five strikeouts. Laredo starter Greg Wilborn lasted just three innings to drop his first decision of the year.

Wichita is 24-14, while Laredo is 22-15. The teams meet again at 7:05 p.m.
